Think first, buy second
The most expensive decisions are the ones made without comparison and carried for years afterwards.

What it is about
Whether an off-the-shelf product is enough, whether a quote is realistic, whether a technology will still be maintained in five years: these questions decide more about the cost than the price on the quote.
We also say when a project is not worth doing. That is uncomfortable, and it saves considerably more than any negotiation over hourly rates.
Where we usually start
- Putting quotes and effort estimates in context
- Costing an off-the-shelf product against a custom build
- Assessing existing systems: what stays, what has to go
- Making dependence on single vendors visible
What you end up with
A written assessment with a recommendation, the alternatives, and the points that argue against it. Short enough that it actually gets read.
